Water Floral Foam correctly

Instructions for the correct watering of Floral Foam

Nothing is more beautiful than a festive flower arrangement for a special occasion. It doesn't matter whether it's a flower arrangement for a wedding, a milestone birthday, a communion or a company anniversary.

To ensure that the flowers are optimally supplied with water and last a long time, it is particularly important to water the Floral Foam correctly. This is the only way to keep cut flowers fresh even on hot days and keep them looking beautiful for the entire time.

Watering Floral Foam correctly step by step

  1. You should use a sufficiently large container filled with fresh, clean water to water fresh flower foam. Ideally, the water temperature should be around 18° Celsius.
TIP: The flowers will stay fresh for a particularly long time if you add FloraLife® flower food (available here in the shop) to the water.

  2. Place the Floral Foam into the water and allow it to soak up completely like a sponge without any external influence (e.g. by pressing it down). This process takes no longer than 90 seconds for one brick.

  3. Please avoid turning the Floral Foam in order to water it from all sides. If the Floral Foam is turned or pressed under water, the outer cells are sealed with water and the air can no longer escape from the inner cells. A dry core remains inside the Floral Foam, which does not supply the flowers with water later, but actually draws it out of them, causing them to wilt extremely quickly. If, on the other hand, the Fresh Floral Foam fills up "on its own", the air can escape upwards completely. The water can distribute itself evenly in the foam and no dry patches form. This ensures that every flower in the arrangement is reliably supplied with water.

  4. Please do not leave your Fresh Floral Foam in the water for a long period of time to prevent bacteria from forming.

Watering large Floral Foam Products

The conventional watering method is rather difficult for large foam products. A mortar mixing tray (available from DIY stores) is best suited for watering very large products.

It should be cleaned with FloraLife® Cleaner (available here in the shop) and the water level in the container should be as high as possible. If it is not possible to place the product with the foam side completely flat on the water, water it by holding it vertically and (in the case of a heart, with the tip of the heart first) slowly dipping it deep into the tub until the lower half of the product has been soaked up with water. Then turn the product over to soak the top half in the same way.

A long balcony box is ideal for watering large rings or wreaths. Water the ring or wreath by placing it upright in the balcony box. As soon as the part of the product standing in the water has soaked up water, turn the ring/wreath to water the next part. Continue until the ring/wreath is completely watered.

The Floral Foam can now be decorated with flowers of your choice.

It is important here that you cut the flower stems at an angle with a sharp knife - ideally at an angle of 45° - so that the flowers can be placed deep in the Floral Foam in rows and hold well. The blade of the knife or scissors should be sharp and clean. This prevents the stems and Floral Foam from being crushed and ensures an optimum water supply.

A straight cut, on the other hand, compresses the Floral Foam, making it unstable. It can no longer hold the flowers in place and water absorption is not guaranteed to a sufficient extent.

If you are working individually with bricks or slabs of Floral Foam and want to shape them into the desired form, you should do this in a dry state before watering. You can easily cut the mass with our foam cutter. You can then water the foam, place it in a container (such as bowls, glasses or vases) and decorate it with fresh flowers as described.

How long do flowers stay fresh with Floral Foam?

How long cut flowers stay fresh in floral arrangements with Floral Foam depends on many different factors:

  • Freshness of the flowers themselves
  • Processing temperature
  • The hygiene applied during cutting (e.g. clean cutting tools, cleaning of containers and work surfaces)
  • Care of the flowers during storage
  • Addition of flower nutrients in the finished arrangement (e.g. FloraLife® flower care for the home)
  • Location of the flower arrangement

Under optimal conditions, the flowers can stay fresh for around 14 days.

When using Floral Foam, please ensure that you do not reuse foam that has already been used.

After a few days, the bacteria present in the flower stems will have multiplied to such an extent that the shelf life of freshly cut flowers is reduced by around 50%! The water retention capacity of foam that has already been used is also reduced, which means that water leakage cannot be prevented.
