Our company history
A true milestone in the world of floristry: the dawn of OASIS® Floral Products
When Vernon L. Smithers developed and introduced the first water‑absorbing floral foam in 1954, his innovation transformed the floral industry forever. It became an instant sensation: for the first time, florists could arrange cut flowers in a reliable, easy‑to‑use plug‑in medium. This breakthrough not only extended the longevity of floral designs but also opened up an entirely new world of creative possibilities for floral artistry.

Our German location is situated in the heart of the Palatinate region: Smithers-Oasis Germany GmbH in Grünstadt. Here, in a modern factory with around 120 dedicated employees (as of October 2025), we produce and distribute the world-renowned OASIS® floral foam. Our floral foam is truly “Made in Germany” – developed and manufactured directly on site, according to the highest quality standards. This combination of many years of experience and strict production guidelines makes our foam so unique and reliable.
Grünstadt is not only conveniently located, but also a lively business location with strong regional ties. Our factory is one of the largest employers in the region and is a central hub for supplying the German and European markets – including Austria, Switzerland and Italy.
As a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Chemical Industry Association, we are part of a strong network within the chemical industry. This partnership provides access to valuable training opportunities, specialist events, and support in promoting young talent.
